Perfect Isys skirt set
Aztec print symbolizes the Native American tribes that flourished in Central Mexico. I used orange because it is the universal color for indigenous people, a movement created by Phyllis Webstad, a survivor of a racist assault. The style was inspired by a new age cuēitl. A cuēitl is a skirt upper-class Aztec women wore that consisted of a long piece of fabric held up by a sash.
Friendly Lilah Short set
RTW look. I wanted to showcase something simple and chic but still correspond with my inspiration. I sewed green triangles around the babydoll bust seam and hem to imitate leaves. I was inspired by Frida Kahlo's 'Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird' painting. The shorts are made from a crinkled recyled silk/poly. I chose this vibrant red because it is one of the most seen colors in Mexican art and culture.
FAShion scene maxi set
Wearable Art. The fabric softly folds to frame your face, like petals on a flower. Frida’s portraits often showed her wearing flowers to celebrate her national heritage. The maxi skirt is also a big part of her identity. Because of her polio, one leg was much thinner than the other, so she wore longer skirts to hide the fact. The type of skirt I designed is called a Huipil skirt, which is part of the Tehuana costume.
traditional tehuana dress
The Complete Tehuana dress consisting of an upper garment and a long, colorful skirt. The top is cotton and decorated with elaborate embroidery around the neckline, sleeves, openings, and the hems. Leggings were paired with this traditional dress because it was what Native American women generally wore. I wanted to end the collection with the color orange to reinforce building stronger relationships between the indigenous and non-indigenous.
